Traditional Scottish Ash Spurtle
The Spurtle is a Scottish utensil from the 15th century used to stir porridge, soups, stews and broth. The rod-like shape means that porridge can be stirred without congealing and forming lumps, unlike a spoon, which would have a dragging effect during stirring. The low surface area reduces the chances of porridge sticking to the instrument.
I make these by hand on my lathe in my small workshop in Glasgow using locally sourced Ash. The longer ones are around 30cm and the shorter ones are around 20cm but I can make them to any size you like.
Once the shape feels right I sand them smooth and finish them with my own blend of pure mineral oil and beeswax.
Wash them by hand and pat dry and they'll last you a lifetime. Please don't put them in the dishwasher.
